Andeana: Piura Artisan Sourcing
Each year, Andeana Hats travels to South America to scout new artisans and celebrate the region's diverse craftsmanship. On this year’s sourcing trip to Piura, Peru, we partnered with Toquilla hat artisans from the vibrant town of Catacaos, renowned for its rich tradition of crafting these iconic hats. The artistry of Toquilla hats, also known as "Panama hats," dates back centuries and reflects the deep cultural roots of the region. Each hat is meticulously handwoven from the fibers of the Toquilla palm, a skill passed down through generations. By honoring the traditional craft of these artisans, Andeana Hats not only honors their timeless craftsmanship but also supports local communities, preserves a vital cultural tradition, and ensures the legacy of Toquilla hat-making endures for years to come.
This trip held a special place in my heart, as it brought me full circle to Piura, Peru—the very place where my journey in this incredible country began. Back in 2008, I first came to Piura with the non-profit Nexos Comunitarios, and all these years later, we are still collaborating on meaningful projects. Earlier this year, while attending Peru Moda, I had the privilege of meeting Martha and Julissa from Piura. I was instantly captivated by their remarkable work. A few months later, we traveled to their home and workshop, where we had the honor of beginning a working relationship that I am so excited to nurture and grow.
